UN agency proposes incentives to convince farmers to protect environment

Paying farmers to adopt eco-friendly practices could provide incentives for protecting the environment and mitigating climate change, a UN agency said in a report Thursday. Cash incentives are essential if farmers are to compete in the global market while using techniques that help, rather than degrade, the environment, the Food and Agriculture Organization said in its annual report on the state of food and agriculture. But it said it remained to be seen where the money would come from and how the strategy would be carried out.
