UN secretary-general expresses optimism about more forces for Darfur

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is expressing optimism about expanding peacekeeping forces in Darfur after meeting with Sudan's foreign minister. Ban is in Washington for talks Friday with President George W. Bush. He told The Associated Press Thursday that officials are "moving toward the right direction" on efforts to boost peacekeeping forces in Sudan's conflict-wracked Darfur region. He says he reminded Sudanese Foreign Minister Deng Alor that civilian lives must be protected in western Darfur.
