UNSC meets in emergency session to debate the future status of Kosovo

Serbia's president promised not to resort to violence while pressing his case against an independent Kosovo, a dispute that split the major powers, Russia and China against the United States and European nations. The Serbian president, Boris Tadic, had come to the UN Security Council on the second day of its emergency session as a last resort after Kosovo proclaimed itself an independent nation. The meeting ended after 2 1/2 hours without agreement on a resolution or joint statement. Serbia, backed by its allies in Moscow and Beijing, described Kosovo as a reckless violator of international law for its independence announcement Sunday.
