Federal authorities say a US citizen arrested for receiving training from al-Qaeda in his effort to help overthrow the Somali government is a dangerous person who did not think the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks were an evil act and should not be freed on bond.
But his defense attorney argues the New Hampshire man renounced his violent beliefs before he was taken into custody.
US Magistrate Judge Calvin Botley was set to decide Wednesday whether Daniel Joseph Maldonado will remain in the custody of federal authorities until his trial.
Maldonado, 28, a Muslim convert also known as Daniel Aljughaifi and Abu Mohammed, is accused of traveling in November to an al-Qaeda terrorist camp in Somalia, where he was trained to use firearms and explosives in an effort to help another group, the Islamic Courts Union, topple the Somali government and install an Islamic state.
