The US Justice Department is handling German warrants for the arrests of 13 suspected CIA agents in a case involving the alleged kidnapping and torture of a German citizen, and US-German relations have not been damaged by the incident, the State Department said Thursday.
Spokesman Sean McCormack cited the visit of Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and other European Union ministers for a Friday meeting on the Middle East as evidence of continuing good cooperation between the United States and Europe.
Prosecutor Christian Schmidt-Sommerfeld said in Munich, Germany, that 13 warrants were issued in the last few days in connection with the seizure and imprisonment in late 2003 of Khaled al-Masri, a German of Lebanese descent. He was released after about six months and complained of being mistreated.
