US immigration appeals board upholds deportation order for ex-Nazi guard

A federal appeals board has upheld a deportation order for a man who served as a Nazi concentration camp guard in World War II.
Josias Kumpf, 83, served as a guard at the Trawniki Training Camp in Nazi-occupied Poland and the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp near Berlin.
The federal Board of Immigration Appeals upheld the deportation order issued in January 2007 by Chicago-based immigration Judge Jennie Giambastiani.
A federal judge in Milwaukee had stripped Kumpf's US citizenship in 2005 after concluding he "personally assisted" in the persecution of prisoners. The judge said Kumpf stood guard near pits that had been the site of a massacre and shot those who tried to escape.
