A bill to allow US shipment of civilian nuclear fuel to India became bogged down Wednesday as lawmakers tried to work out differences and time dwindled in a congressional session scheduled to end this week.
Congressional aides said agreement on the text of a compromise bill was preliminarily settled Wednesday morning, but the House of Representatives' majority leader, Republican Rep. John Boehner, stopped the bill from going forward. The sources, who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of negotiations over the bill, said Boehner appeared to be interested in attaching legislation not related to the India bill, although they said they did not know what that legislation was.
Boehner's office denied that the lawmaker was holding up the bill and said discussions by negotiators were under way.
