US, Poland to hold talks on missile defense

Polish and US officials met Thursday on a US request to place a missile defense base in Poland - a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin warned anew that the system could spark a new arms race. Putin said Wednesday that he remains firmly opposed to a US plan to place parts of a missile defense shield in Poland and the Czech Republic, two former Soviet satellite countries in eastern Europe. "It won't lead to anything but a new spiral in the arms race," Putin said in Vienna. "We consider this totally counterproductive and are trying to demonstrate this to our partners."
