The United States urged the Security Council on Tuesday to update the list of Taliban members subject to UN sanctions, saying the current list does not reflect the new Taliban fighters responsible for an upsurge in attacks in Afghanistan.
US Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad said the Security Council committee monitoring sanctions against the Taliban and al-Qaida has not updated the Taliban list since 2003.
"The United States strongly believes that the committee must focus on updating the list to make it a relevant and potent tool in the fight against the Taliban and al-Qaida in Afghanistan," Khalilzad told an open council meeting.
"We believe in a three-pronged approach - sanctioning new Taliban who are responsible for the current upsurge in violence, delisting former Taliban who have severed their ties, and adding new and updated biographic information to help states better enforce the sanctions."
