Iran announces: Russia will sell us advanced surface-air missile system

Russia will supply Iran with the advanced S-300 surface-air missiles in accordance with an agreement sealed Tuesday night, The Iranian Fars agency quoted Iranian Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar as saying Wednesday. Najjar dismissed speculation regarding a connection between the deal and a recent US intelligence report which claimed that Iran had frozen its nuclear weapons plan in 2003. The S-300 is the Russian equivalent of the US MIM-104 Patriot system or the US Navy RIM-66 Standard Missile 2 (SM-2), and can engage various types of missiles and warplanes at vaying altitudes. According to the Fars agency, the system will "grant Iran air superiority over enemy missiles and aircrafts."
