Iran confirms seizing three Finns in Persian Gulf

Iran confirmed Wednesday it detained three Finnish nationals who strayed into its territorial waters during a fishing trip in the Persian Gulf, while Helsinki officials expressed hope the men would be released soon. Ahmad Akhoundi, deputy governor of Iran's Hormozgan province, was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency that the three Finns "entered Iranian territorial waters" around the Abu Musa island. The three were "currently questioned by judiciary authorities" Akhoundi added but did not say where they were being held. Earlier, Finnish Ambassador Heikki Puurunen said Iranian officials had assured him that the three men were in good condition and had been treated well since their Saturday detention.
