Iran's top nuclear envoy said Wednesday he expected "new ideas" from a senior EU official at talks on resolving the deadlock over Tehran's refusal to meet UN Security Council demands that it freeze its uranium enrichment program.
Ali Larijani said he did not know what new initiatives might be offered during a meeting with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana. But he suggested that Solana - representing the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany - could be coming to the table with a new formulation on the demanded enrichment freeze.
"There are supposed to be new ideas introduced, and that's why we are here," Larijani told reporters before the afternoon meeting with Solana.
Shortly before the meeting started, Solana expressed hope "that this time we'll be able to move on ... the sooner the better to meaningful negotiations."
