Portugal slams Iran visit criticism

Ayalon backs Israeli ambassador criticism of host's actions as "correct."

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon backed Israel’s ambassador to Portugal on Wednesday, after the Portuguese Foreign Ministry said it will summon the envoy to protest criticism he voiced about Lisbon’s reception for Iranian Foreign Minister Manoucher Mottaki.
AFP quoted the envoy, Ehud Gol, as telling a local news agency it was surprising and disappointing that some European countries violate decisions by European institutions. He noted that the step sent a dangerous dual-message to Teheran.
Ayalon said that Gol’s words were correct and “compatible with the policy of Israel and the international community which is calling for the isolation of the regime of the ayatollahs in Teheran until it stops its nuclear ambitions, supporting terrorism and spreading hate.”
