A philanthropic program offering university scholarships to combat soldiers has raised sufficient funds to cover all applications in both the current and the coming academic years, according to one of its key officials.
Leon Tenenbaum, the president of the Miami chapter of the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces, said the Impact Program had raised money for 1,200 of the $4,000 per year scholarships, more than sufficient to pay Israeli university tuition fees for both years.
This is in contrast to previous years, when only about 50-60 percent of applications could be accepted and disappointed applicants were asked to reapply the following year.
"It's the first time ever that we've been able to meet all the needs," said Tenenbaum, who stressed that all monies donated to the program went directly to the scholarships, because administrative costs are underwritten separately.
He said the Impact Program was initiated in Chicago, whose chapter was the biggest contributor. His Miami chapter had raised $600,000 this year, he said.
