Former Jerusalem police chief Aryeh Amit and businessman Avi Shaked have joined the growing list of celebrities throwing their weight behind the Labor Party and its new leader, Amir Peretz.
Shaked is a co-owner of online casino site Random Logic and was involved in the formation of the Geneva Accord.
This is not the first time that Amit has been involved in the political scene. In 2003, he was reportedly approached by Likud as a possible candidate for that party in the Tel Aviv municipal elections. In 1998, he was slated to run as incumbent Tel Aviv mayor Roni Milo's Labor-leaning number two, but bowed out of the race for what he described as personal reasons.
Recently, Amit was the head of a governmental committee established to combat nightclub violence. The recommendations submitted by the committee to Interior Minister Ophir Pines-Paz and Internal Security Minister Gideon Ezra.
The conclusions included: stationing policemen at the entrance to major nightclubs, training bouncers and security guards, preventing the sale of drugs, delivering antiviolence lectures at schools and ensuring that all nightclubs obtain the necessary licenses.
