Barak asks Friedmann to check legality of bombing residential neighborhoods

Defense Minister Ehud Barak asked Justice Minister Daniel Freidmann to examine the legality of attacking residential neighborhoods in the Gaza Strip, if those areas are being used to launch rockets against Israel. The request came after Vice-Premier Haim Ramon noted during the weekly cabinet meeting that such actions are condoned by international law. "In the Second Lebanon War it was clear that if they shoot from a village, it was permissable to return fire even [if it meant hitting a] civilian population," Ramon said, adding that the decision was "legally approved."
