Bill approved to make schools handicapped accessible

The Knesset Labor, Welfare and Health Committee approved for a second and third reading on Tuesday a bill which would compel the Education Minister to standardize regulations regarding registering handicapped children for school. Specifically, the bill calls on the minister to ensure that there is enough time between when a handicapped student registers for school and when he or she starts to modify the school to make it handicapped accessible. The new regulations would set up a timetable so that all the necessary renovations could be made in time. The Education Ministry's representative at the meeting notified the committee that the government opposed the bill because it would be hard to implement.
