Bill requiring helmets for bicyclists tabled

A private member's bill initiated by Beterem, the National Council for Child Safety and Health, and presented by Likud MK Gilad Erdan would require every bicycle rider to wear an approved safety helmet with a strap under the chin. The bill, if passed by the Knesset, is expected to reduce head injuries by 85 percent. Beterem said on Tuesday that according to research, three-quarters of children don't wear a helmet while riding bikes. Every year, three or four children are killed in bike accidents, and an additional 700 are injured. A cost-efficiency study predicts that the legislation would save the Israeli economy $44.2 million dollars in five years.
