A months-long police sting ended Tuesday in the arrest of some 18 members of one of Israel's biggest car theft rings.
Channel 2 reported that the suspects would break into a car and, using a special tool, replace the vehicle's computer system with one of their own, a technique that enabled them to override anti-theft measures.
Furthermore, the gang had figured out how to beat the checkpoints and make their getaway into the West Bank. A lookout car would head for the nearest checkpoint and confirm that no police were patrolling the area, and another gang member would be present at the checkpoint to give the driver of the stolen car the go-ahead.
While most of the suspected thieves were from east Jerusalem, the mastermind was based in Ramallah.
