Elite IDF soldier killed in Gaza Sterip operation

Two others lightly wounded as troops are ambushed near Kissufim. One Hamas man reportedly killed and four others wounded in the clash.

An elite IDF soldier was killed and two others were wounded on Wednesday during clashes with Palestinian gunmen in the southern Gaza Strip. The soldiers were from the Golani Brigade's elite Egoz unit and were operating to uncover terror infrastructure near the Kissufim Crossing, once the main crossing into Gaza before Israel's 2005 unilateral withdrawal. As the soldiers searched the area, they came under gun and anti-tank missile fire from a well-planned ambush by Palestinian gunmen. One of the soldiers was killed and two others were lightly wounded. All were evacuated to Soroka Hospital in Beersheba for treatment. The IDF troops returned fire and according to Palestinian reports one Hamas operative was killed and at least four others were wounded. On Tuesday, soldiers from the Givati Brigade - backed by tanks - killed three Palestinians in the northern Gaza Strip. During the operation, the troops uncovered a three-meter deep tunnel that was being dug about 700 meters from the border with Israel. IDF sources said it was likely that the tunnel was being dug to be used in a terror attack against Israel.
