Environmental concerns bring work on new base complex to a stop

The District Court of Beersheba issued an injunction order Wednesday to stop construction work on the IDF's army base town in the Negev which began earlier in the day.
The injunction was issued in light of an appeal filed at the court by the Israel Union for Environmental Defense, which objects to the location chosen for the base.
According to IDF plans, the army base town, scheduled to open in 2012, will house nine IDF training facilities currently located at Tzrifin, near Ramle.
But environmental organizations say the base is being built dangerously close to hazardous waste sites in nearby Ramat Hovav, and could endanger soldiers' health.
