The Environmental Protection Ministry urged the elderly, people with heart ailments, children and pregnant women to refrain from outdoor physical activity on Monday because of the dust which has covered much of the country.
The ministry's air pollution meters measured particle rates at ten times the average in most cities in northern and central Israel.
The ministry said the dust was supposed to gradually settle until Tuesday morning when the advent of westerly winds would dramatically improve air quality.
