Ex-Kiryat Shmona mayor sentenced to 12 months prison for fraud

Former Kiryat Shmona Mayor Haim Barbiba'i, convicted three months ago of accepting bribes, fraud and breach of faith and false registration in company documents, was sentenced to 12 months prison service and a NIS 250,000 fine at the Nazareth Magistrate's Court Wednesday morning. The affair involved the aftermath of the mayoral elections in 2003, which Barbiba'i won after the second round of balloting. To cover campaign debts, he solicited contributions from contractors and businessmen to repay them, who then demanded favorable treatment from him. He was also convicted of trying to cover up his tracks.
