The fine for driving while talking on a cell phone will double within 30 days, increasing from NIS 500 to NIS 1,000.
The Knesset Economics Committee announced on Tuesday that it had implemented a number of changes that would raise the price of driving violations, in response to a request from the Transportation Ministry.
The penalty for not wearing a seat belt has been adjusted so that the driver and all passengers will now be fined NIS 250 each. This corrects a previous discrepancy in the law, which only fined passengers NIS 150.
"It just didn't make sense that more responsibility fell on the driver who wasn't wearing a seat belt and had to pay NIS 250, when he was also responsible for the children sitting in the back seat without belts, [who only had to pay] NIS 100," said committee head MK Gilad Erdan. "This distortion has been rectified today."
Similar increases have been applied to fines for parking illegally, driving without a license or registration, riding a bicycle on the side of the road, and covering up license plates.
Previously, people who did not have the required yellow vest in their car or did not wear it were brought to court. According to the new law, however, they will be fined NIS 250.
"Accidents on the road are very damaging, and I believe that raising the penalties for these violations will result in fewer accidents and will encourage safer driving," declared Erdan.
