The Knesset's approval of a bill setting the terms of Supreme Court presidents and their deputies at seven years is a great achievement for the courts, Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann said on Tuesday morning.
In an interview with Army Radio, Friedmann - who has long been at odds with Supreme Court President Dorit Beinisch over the power of Supreme Court justices - said that "this is a law that ensures the independence of the court presidents, and also ensures the renewal of the system, since after one term of seven years, there will be room to elect new people."
The previous system entailed a term of four years, which could be renewed each time.
