From president's house to courthouse

  • July 5, 2006: Katsav tells Mazuz a woman is trying to blackmail him. He leaves a letter for the attorney-general and says he has a cassette to prove his allegation.
  • July 8, 2006: Channel 2 reports the meeting. Katsav denies he intends to lodge a complaint.
  • July 11, 2006: Mazuz orders police to investigate whether Katsav was being extorted by an employee in Beit Hanassi, as well as allegations against him.
  • July 26, 2006: Police question Beit Hanassi Aleph for 14 hours.
  • August 23, 2006: Police question Katsav under caution for first time.
  • October 15, 2006: Police recommend indicting Katsav on charges including two counts of rape.
  • November 27, 2006: Katsav promises to suspend himself from presidency if Mazuz indicts him.
  • January 23, 2007: Mazuz announces that he plans to indict Katsav, conditional on the outcome of a hearing. The draft includes one rape charge involving Tourism Ministry Aleph and other charges regarding four of the women who complained against him, including Beit Hanassi Aleph.
  • January 25, 2007: Katsav makes speech on television blaming media, police, prosecution and women who complained of conspiracy to topple him.
  • April 1, 2007: Mazuz announces he is adding second charge of rape regarding Tourism Ministry Aleph to draft indictment against Katsav
  • May 2, 2007: Mazuz holds first of two hearings for Katsav's lawyers
  • June 28, 2007: Mazuz announces plea bargain agreement with Katsav's lawyers in which almost all serious charges included in the draft are dropped, including all charges involving Beit Hanassi Aleph.
  • July 1, 2007: Katsav resigns from presidency.
  • July 2007: In the space of a few days, six individuals and organizations petition the High Court of Justice against Mazuz's decision.
  • February 26, 2008: High Court rejects petitions by a vote of 3-2. Supreme Court Justice Dorit Beinisch, in a minority opinion, argues that the mild crimes depicted in the indictment do not reflect the charges filed.
  • April 6, 2008: Jerusalem Magistrate's Court hears Katsav's demands to receive all remaining material collected by the state that has not yet been handed over. Court needs more time to decide.
  • April 8, 2008: Katsav announces he is withdrawing from plea bargain.
