Schools in Sderot and the Gaza periphery can open without fear next week, OC Home Front Command Maj.-Gen. Yitzhak Gershon told cabinet ministers on Wednesday. According to Gershon, there is a surplus of fortified classrooms in the area, and students will therefore have adequate protection from Kassam rockets, Army Radio reported. Gershon noted that two schools had specific problems, but that a solution was expected in the next few days. The Sderot education department said in response that it was unfamiliar with the figures Gershon quoted, adding that Home Front Command officials had recently examined the protection level of local schools and had actually branded several classrooms as unsafe. The Sderot Parents' Association, meanwhile, said that they still had no plans to send their children to schools in the city because there was still a lack of protection in classrooms and at school bus stops.
