High Court gives go-ahead for new chief of staff

The High Court of Justice finished on Sunday its discussion of three petitions demanding that the appointment of a new IDF Chief of General Staff be frozen until the Winograd Commission into the summer's Lebanon war publishes its initial findings. Supreme Court President Justice Dorit Beinisch said that the government was responsible for choosing a new chief of staff to replace Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz, who announced his resignation, and that the appointment should not be delayed. If the candidate to replace Halutz came under criticism in the Winograd findings, Beinisch said, the appointment could be reexamined.
