The High Court of Justice offered a compromise on Tuesday in the case against Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger, who was allegedly given free room and board when he and his family stayed at Jerusalem's David Citadel Hotel in 2004.
The judges suggested that Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz draft a new opinion on the case, dropping his recommendation that Rabbi Metzger resign from his post, as well as any references to former cases associated with the chief rabbi.
The new draft would deal only with the findings of the investigation into the hotel affair and the decision to close the case.
Mazuz, who recommended removing Rabbi Metzger from his position last year after the investigation failed to produce enough evidence to charge the chief rabbi, was given a week to submit his response to the compromise.
