The strike expected to begin Wednesday was averted after Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Histadrut Chairman Ofer Eini
made great strides in their negotiations, the Prime Minister's Office said on Tuesday.
At 5 p.m. Eini is scheduled to hold a press conference in the Histadrut building in Tel Aviv, where he will outline the meeting's results and also the expected continuation of negotiations.
Sources in the Histadrut had yet to comment on the Prime Minister's Office statement.
On Tuesday morning, prior to Olmert's meeting with Eini, Histadrut members said that "the prime minister was afraid to come to a decision that would repay the salaries owed by local authorities to their employees once and for all."
