House Committee vote fails to impeach Katsav

In its third and final meeting on the matter, the Knesset House Committee on Wednesday failed to pass a motion to impeach President Moshe Katsav. Seven MKs voted in favor of impeachment, four voted against and two abstained. Even before the vote took place, however, the motion was destined to fail because at least 19 of the 25 committee members would have needed to vote in order for it to pass. Committee Chairwoman Ruhama Avraham had said six MKs would not be allowed to vote because they had not participated in at least 50 percent of the committee's meetings.
