IAF pilot ejects from jet near Ashdod beach

An IAF pilot ejected from his fighter jet Thursday, landing safely near a beach in Ashdod. The pilot abandoned his Skyhawk jet after it sustained a technical malfunction in the engine. He was evacuated by an airforce search and rescue team to a nearby hospital. Following the incident, IDF commander Maj.-Gen. Elazar Shkedy appointed a committee to investigate the circumstances of the malfunction. The IDF said that the pilot acted according to proper procedure when ejecting after experiencing the malfunction. The Skyhawk planes were received by the IAF in the late sixties, and have been in recent years used by the airforce for training new fighter pilots.
