IDF: Syria, Iran want to escalate Lebanon crisis

The IDF's head of intelligence, Maj.-Gen. Amos Yadlin, accused Syria and Iran of trying to aggravate the situation in Lebanon. "Syria and Iran see the fighting on the northern border as an opportunity to advance their interests and agenda," Yadlin said at a press conference on Sunday. "Iran is facing possible international sanctions over its nuclear program. Syria is worried about the investigation into former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri's assassination and its possible legal consequences. The abduction of the soldiers in the North helped Syria and Iran to divert attention from these issues," Yadlin said. "Both of them are improving their strategic position at the expense of the Lebanese people."
