Illegal Arab home demolished in east Jerusalem

Jerusalem Municipality wreckage crews on Monday demolished an illegally built Arab home in east Jerusalem, the city said. There were no reports of violence during the early-morning court-ordered demolition in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Hanina, which was carried out under heavy police guard, Jerusalem police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby said. The city said that the four-story construction was "one of the most severe" building violations ever carried out in Jerusalem, and was in blatant violation of court-orders. Palestinians and left-wing Israelis complain it is difficult for Arabs to obtain building permits in Jerusalem forcing them to build illegally, while the municipality insists it is evenhanded in enforcing building codes in all parts of the city.
