Indian and Bangladeshi forces traded gunfire for more than four hours Wednesday in a disputed border area, officials from both countries said. One Bangladeshi was reported wounded.
Small-scale exchanges of gunfire break out occasionally along the 4,000-kilometer (2,500-mile) India-Bangladesh border, usually sparked by disputes over unmarked border areas. But even when there are injuries or even deaths, the clashes seldom lead to serious diplomatic issues between the countries.
The shooting, the first cross-border firefight in nearly a year, took place in the early morning along the border with India's remote northeastern state of Assam, said Gautam Ganguly, a local government official.
The incident took place in the Cachar area, some 400 kilometers (250 miles) south of Gauhati, Assam's capital.
Both sides blamed the other for starting the incident.
