Japanese PM Koizumi to arrive in Israel Tuesday

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi is scheduled to arrive in Israel Tuesday for the first visit by a Japanese prime minister in over a decade. The last time a Japanese prime minister visited here was when Tomiichi Murayama visited in 1995 for talks with Yitzhak Rabin. Koizumi was originally scheduled to visit in January, but was forced to cancel because of former prime minister Ariel Sharon's stroke. Koizumi is scheduled to meet Wednesday with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, and President Moshe Katsav. On Thursday he is scheduled to go to Ramallah for a meeting with Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Monday that among the issues he would discuss with his Japanese counterpart were the nuclear threats posed by North Korea and Iran.
