The Jerusalem Municipality on Wednesday demolished an illegally built Arab home in east Jerusalem, the city said. The one-story home that was razed in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Shuafat had been illicitly re-built after previously being destroyed, and was demolished after a court appeal against the demolition was rejected, a city spokesman said. Since the beginning of the year, the city has issued and carried out 44 demolition orders, including 30 in east Jerusalem and 14 in west Jerusalem, the city said. 21 of the illegal structures were demolished by the owners themselves. Palestinians and left-wing Israelis complain it is difficult for Arabs to obtain building permits in Jerusalem forcing them to build illegally, while the municipality insists it is evenhanded in enforcing building codes in all parts of the city.
