'Karni, Erez to close unless Rafah is controlled'

Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz warned on Wednesday that if the Palestinian Authority fails to control the Rafah border crossing, allowing wanted terrorists to pass through, then Israel would close the Karni and Erez checkpoints between the Gaza Strip and Israel. At a tour of Kerem Shalom in the western Negev, the defense minister revealed that Israel planned on investing hundreds of millions of shekels monitoring the Israeli-Egyptian border in the next three years, according to Israel Radio. The Rafah border crossing was opened for traffic on Saturday. Israel agreed that the Palestinians operate the border in the presence of an EU monitoring team in cooperation with Israeli sources.
