The Tel Aviv District Court on Thursday ruled that Kate Maynard, one of two British attorneys who sued former OC Southern Commander Maj.-Gen. Doron Almog for alleged war crimes, be released from custody and allowed to enter Israel.
Maynard, who filed the lawsuit in tandem with British-Israeli lawyer Daniel Machover, had been barred by the Interior Ministry from receiving an entry visa, and she was even interrogated by the Shin Bet.
After Almog, who in September traveled to London with his family, was informed that he would be arrested if he disembarked, he returned to Israel. Shortly thereafter, the cabinet unanimously adopted a resolution drawn up by former Justice Minister Tzipi Livni to fight legislation in European countries that made it possible to arrest citizens of other counties for crimes allegedly committed abroad.
The cabinet also acknowledged the need to provide legal assistance to any Israeli who found himself in circumstances similar to Almog's.
The Foreign Ministry and Justice Ministry also sent a team to Britain to come up with ways to deal with a situation in which extremist groups can request the arrest of IDF soldiers for alleged war crimes.
