Livni prepares for Cairo despite political troubles

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni is trying to carry on with business as usual at the Foreign Ministry, preparing for a trip to Cairo on May 10.
Sources close to Livni said Thursday that despite the tension between her and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, their two bureaus were communicating.
It was not clear whether she would be meeting with Olmert before her trip.
In addition to going to Cairo, Livni will be hosting German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier next week, who will also be meeting Olmert.
A US-Israel strategic dialogue originally scheduled for this month in Washington has been postponed, apparently because of the political situation here.
Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz heads the Israeli team to these talks.
A spokesperson for Mofaz gave no reason for the postponement, but one government source said it would be difficult to "focus" on these talks at the present time.
One of the purposes of the talks was to begin working on a new multiyear US military aid package to Israel.
The last 10-year plan, during which civilian aid to Israel was gradually phased out and military
aid was increased, expired this year.
