Military police crack down on deserters

In a crackdown to nab reservists and soldiers who failed to show up for military service, the military police arrested 170 deserters, including ten former residents of Gush Katif. The army denied claims that the former settlers had been purposely singled out because of their refusal to serve in the ranks during the disengagement from Gaza. According to the IDF Spokesperson, the raid was a routine one aimed at cracking down on deserters, and focused on those who serve in the reserve army as well as soldiers doing compulsory service.
