The future of both Israel and Jordan will be at risk if Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's Kadima Party wins the March 28 election, Likud Chairman Binyamin Netanyahu warned on a tour of the Jordan Valley on Sunday.
Standing at the edge of a cliff near Mitzpe Yericho overlooking the valley, Netanyahu complained that the public has not taken to heart his warnings in his weekly visits to strategic locations around the country.
"Olmert and Labor would allow Hamas to control the Jordan Valley and leave both Israel and Jordan at risk," Netanyahu said. "Only the Likud will be able to defend Israel and Jordan because we will keep all of the Jordan Valley and the Judean Desert as an eastern security strip. This land can be used by Hamas to attack us. We have to stop it."
Netanyahu was accompanied on the trip by Likud MKs Yuval Steinitz, Limor Livnat and Moshe Kahlon. Steinitz complained that Olmert gave an ambiguous answer when he was asked about the future of the valley in an interview last week. He said the public should demand that Kadima say clearly whether the valley will remain part of Israel.
"Olmert has talked about giving up 90 percent of the West Bank and since the Jordan Valley and Judean Desert are 40 percent of the West Bank, they have already given it up," Netanyahu said.
In an interview with the French Edition of The Jerusalem Post, Netanyahu quoted Jabotinsky in saying that when people say they want to kill Jews, they have to be taken at their word. He said the public should realize how grave the current situation is.
"Jews have a habit of not recognizing danger until the last minute," Netanyahu said.
