'NIS 279m. in education budget cuts to affect reform plan'

The Education Ministry plans to cut NIS 279 million from the local authorities' education budget this coming school year - NIS 85m. of which was already part of the 2008 state budget, according to the Center for Local Government. The center claimed that part of the funds to be cut were supposed to go toward, among other things, the "New Horizon" education reform being promoted by Education Minister Yuli Tamir. The ministry said in response that only NIS 85m. would be cut, and that this would be carried out differentially, according to each local authority's economic situation.
