The National Religious Party and National Union agreed on Wednesday to form a combined Knesset list headed by Rabbi Motti Elon.
It was believed that Elon would be registered with the NRP, and thus the two factions would have equal representation in the combined right-wing bloc, according to Army Radio.
Elon, younger brother of National Union leader Benny Elon, came from a background in education, and enjoyed great popularity in religious circles.
The two parties have held a series of failed negotiations in the last few weeks in attempt to combine their factions.
