Shimon Peres met Monday with Poland's president and visited the Polish hometown of Israel's first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion.
In Plonsk, north of Warsaw, where Ben-Gurion was born in 1886, city authorities welcomed Peres with bread and salt, a traditional greeting.
He later walked through the town and visited an exhibition commemorating the city's vibrant Jewish community that was wiped out by Nazi Germany during World War II. He also visited the place when Ben-Gurion's home once stood.
Later Monday, Peres, a Nobel peace laureate and former prime minister, met in Warsaw with President Lech Kaczynski.
On Tuesday, Peres was to lead 8,000 Jewish students from across the world in the March of the Living, an annual event that retraces the steps of victims of the Nazi death camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
