Peretz approves Shamni as next OC Southern Command

Defense Minister Amir Peretz approved Sunday night IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi's decision to appoint Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's military secretary, Maj.-Gen. Gadi Shamni, as the next OC Central Command.
Shamni will replace Maj.-Gen. Yair Naveh, who has announced plans to retire from military service by the end of the month.
Shamni served in the past as the Gaza Division commander and as head of the Paratrooper's Brigade.
