Peretz, Olmert to meet to choose new IDF chief

An official announcement on the appointment of the next IDF chief of staff is expected on Monday evening, following a 7 p.m. meeting between Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz on the subject. Olmert is expected to support Maj.-Gen. (res.) Gabi Ashkenazi, the candidate chosen by Peretz on Sunday evening, for the position. Peretz, meanwhile, was meeting on Monday evening with IDF Deputy Chief of General Staff Maj.-Gen. Moshe Kaplinsky, who announced on Sunday evening that he was dropping his candidacy for chief of staff, in an effort to convince the senior IDF officer to remain at his post, Israel Radio reported.
