Three senior scientists at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem are set to receive major honors from institutions in Poland this week. The ceremony is to be held on the Mount Scopus campus of the university on Monday.
Prof. Renata Reisfeld, the Enrique Berman Professor Emeritus of Solar Energy, is to receive an honorary professorship from the Polish National Academy of Science. Reisfeld, who was born in Poland, has done extensive research on glass and on energy transfer.
Prof. Jacob Goldberg, professor emeritus of history, has been elected a foreign member of the Academy. Also a Polish native, Goldberg has been previously honored by various Polish institutions and has done research on Poland and Polish Jewry.
Dr. Shela Gorinstein of the Hebrew University's School of Pharmacy is to receive the Cavalier Cross of the Polish Order of Merit - the first Israeli ever to receive this honor. Gorinstein, who was born in Russia and immigrated more than three decades ago, has achieved wide renown for her many research projects on the health benefits of various beverages and fruits. She has worked closely with a number of Polish researchers.
When Gorinstein learned of the honor earlier this year and was told it would be held in Poland, she insisted that it take place in Jerusalem and the Poles agreed.
Polish ambassador to Israel Jan Wocjciech Piekarski and Hebrew University president Prof. Menachem Magidor are to be among those attending.
