'Police encountered gunfire during clashes in Peki'in'

In clashes early Tuesday in the village of Peki'in, policemen encountered violence which included gunfire and riot control weaponry, Northern District Commander Major General Shimon Koren told Israel Radio. "We are talking about riots accompanied by gunfire towards policemen. We are talking about gas and shock grenades being used against policemen," Koren said. Almost 40 people were injured early Tuesday morning when clashes erupted between policemen and rioters in Peki'in. The clashes began after approximately 200 border police, as well as local police, under the command of Galilee Subdistrict Chief Lt.-Cmdr. Nir Mariash, attempted to arrest a number of youth suspected of trying to burn down a cellular antenna.
