Police find vehicle in week's third hit-and-run

Ashkelon police have located the vehicle that was used in a fatal hit-and-run accident near a city beach early Thursday. Police said that around 3 a.m., a vehicle struck a man walking toward Dlila beach on Rehov Yefeh Nof, and then drove away. A passerby saw the victim lying lifeless on the side of the road and summoned officers. Traffic police later found the car behind an Ashkelon shopping center. Police discovered marks on the vehicle consistent with the collision, including a smashed windshield. It was the third fatal hit-and-run in a week. Last Thursday, six-year-old Yedidya Shlomo Kaminsky was struck by a vehicle in Ofakim. After four days of fighting for his life, the boy died Sunday at Beersheba's Soroka Medical Center. Police succeeded in finding the driver who struck Kaminsky; he turned out to be a newly-licensed driver who was driving without the required accompanying adult. Early Monday afternoon, Anat Asher, 29, from Kfar Saba, was fatally struck by a vehicle on busy Rehov Weitzman, near the gas station at the North Ra'anana Junction. The driver who hit her has not been found. Also on Thursday, a teenager was killed and three people were injured when a truck plowed into a pickup truck that had stopped by the roadside to adjust a shifting load. Sagi Asur, 16, of Kiryat Gat, was a passenger in the pickup driven by a Kiryat Gat resident in his forties when the two pulled over on to the shoulder to adjust a trailer load, two km. north of Plugot Junction on Highway 40. Asur exited the pickup truck to arrange the cargo of catering supplies when a second truck slammed in to the pickup and trailer. Asur was pronounced dead at the scene, and the pickup truck's driver was seriously injured. The driver of the second truck and his 14-year-old son were both lightly injured and taken to Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon.
